Researchers from the AZTI technology centre have designed and implemented an Eco-Efficient Production Plan for canning company, Grupo Consorcio, which focuses on reducing the water consumption used in albacore and tuna canning.

The result is a 40% reduction of water consumption, which leads to a decrease in the company’s environmental impact, as well as significant cost savings for the company.

The Eco-Efficient Production Plan is incorporated within the group’s Global Environmental Sustainability Plan and, thanks to its implementation, Grupo Consorcio has achieved an improvement in the efficiency of production processes as well as a significant reduction of the water footprint related to its marketed products.

“We are committed to being a responsible company. We are aware that companies can decide on the future of people, a country’s economy or even global economy, while impacting the environment. Therefore we believe we should lead progress from ethical, responsible and sustainable parameters”, said María Aparicio, corporate social responsibility manager.

The improvement measures created by AZTI have been implemented in the Grupo Consorcio canning facilities in Santoña (Cantabria, Spain). A series of water saving measures have been implemented, including: optimisation of fish thawing processes; reduction of the amount of water used in cooking without affecting the final quality of the product; adapting water volume in several processes (cleaning, washing, cutting, etc.); and the safe reuse of steam condensates. The measures also includes organisational measures that have optimised Consorcio resources, making a cleaner and more competitive process.

“The proposed measures have been designed to have a low cost and investments, if necessary, should have a prompt financial return,” said Jaime Zufia, AZTI sustainable and efficient processes area coordinator.

“These eco-efficient production plans facilitate implementing environmental management systems, helping to improve corporate image and setting out ongoing improvement methods.”

Grupo Consorcio is a company specialised in canning high-quality fish preserves, including anchovies from the Cantabrian Sea, albacore and tuna.
