Fisherman detained, boat seized, on suspicion of illegal fishing
SANDAKAN: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has seized a foreign fishing boat with three crew members onboard near Pulau Lankayan, off waters here.
Sandakan MMEA director Capt A. Razak Abd Rahman said the vessel was spotted during a patrol by the agency’s Ops Pluto Timur team at 7.15am yesterday.
“The crew members, aged between 36 and 59, do not have valid documents and they failed to display their boat license.
“They are suspected of attempting to conduct illegal fishing, as enforcement officers found a fishing trawl on the boat,” he said in a statement, adding that no marine life was found, however.
The boat has been sent to the maritime base here for investigations.
