The practice of building traps in dams, ponds and shallow lakes to acquire aquatic animal have been around since the Neolithic age. The gatherer will then preserve the fish in the trap so that they can be eaten anytime.

Since then, aquaculture has developed into one of the fastest growing food-producing sectors with the current accounts for 50 percent of world fish consumption.
