Solar Panels to Increase Productivity of Tilapia Ponds
EL SALVADOR – In the municipality of Panchimalco a new project is promoting tilapia farming using solar energy.
Through the joint efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) and the Center for Development of Fisheries and Aquaculture (CENDEPESCA), this innovative project will benefit hundreds of farmers in 14 municipalities.
The aim of the project is to promote the cultivation of tilapia in aquaculture ponds using solar panels to increase productivity and lower production costs, which will benefit low income families and therefore contribute to food and nutrition security in El Salvador.
CENDEPESCA will provide training and technical assistance, while the Calvo Group will provide the materials for building ponds.
“We will develop a project that will have the direct investment of no less than $200,000 to help 14 municipalities, said Minister Orestes Ortez during the inauguration of the project in Panchimalco.
The municipalities that will benefit are: Concepcion Batres, Puerto Triunfo, Jiquilisco, San Miguel, Meanguera, Morazan Corinto, El Divisadero, El Sauce, Conchagua, Izalco, San Pablo Tacachico, Zacatecoluca, Jujutla, Soyapango, Panchimalco and Suchitoto.
The project will run over 12 months and will facilitate the construction of 25 ponds and 25 concrete blocks with geomembranes for growing tilapia.
